Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol Review 2011

Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible 4. The Fourth instalment, Ghost Protocol, sees the fall of the IMF organisation as Ethan seeks to recruit a team of experts to help prevent the launch of nuclear weapons from a Russian Terrorist.

The movie's plot begins with the bombing of the Kremlin in Russia were a Russian source pin-points America's IMF organisation as prime suspects. In a desperate bid to start a war between the two countries, Ethan (Cruise) as well as his boss feel it is best the IMF is abolished but sheds light on an opportunity for Ethan and a hand -picked crew to investigate and prevent further assaults from the Russian terrorist.

The cast in MI4 is a delight. As always, Ethan is accompanied by Benji (Simon Pegg) who is back to his old tricks as there is nothing standing in the way when he is involved. New to the series is Jeremy Renner who we know from Ben Affleck's The Town. Jeremy plays Brandt, a so called observer in the IMF. There is more than meets the eye with Brandt as he is a smart character but brings a lot of negativity to the crew. What would a Mission Impossible movie be without the hot female? Introducing Jane, played by Paula Patton. This is a woman that cannot be messed with! Delicate looks can be deceiving as she does more ass kicking in this movie than any other in the franchise.

Ghost Protocol is no hit and miss. This was a quality movie. In fact I believe the best in the series so far. (I say so far because Ethan will be back...I think). The action sequences were the best I have seen in a long time. MI4 avoids your typical blockbuster make no sense type a flick, this was a genuine entertaining film. We all dowelled on the Original Mission Impossible for so long, but now people will be surprised they might actually find Ghost Protocol the best of the bunch.

Certain Scenes like When Ethan is scales the Tallest Building in Dubai. Okay we all seen clips in the trailer previous, but that part in the movie was extraordinary! The whole time through that scene my mind was racing with the fact Tom Cruise performed that particular stunt? and the rest! Absolutely brilliant. There is a scene not long after when a massive sandstorm covers the area as Ethan is caught up in a game a cat and mouse.

Overall a fantastic movie. We might all agree on one thing, the fact that Mission Impossible 2 wasn't too bad and MI3 took the biscuit a bit. Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol is a quality return to what we will always remember Tom Cruise as...Ethan Hunt! (and roll the spy tune....)

My Top 5 movies of 2011

Well it is nearly that time a year again. The time when an over weighted, old pensioner with a white beard shows his strange love for kids by delivering them everything they ever wanted! People celebrate Christmas by getting drunk and fat as we make our way into the year that will be 2012. I have decided to celebrate this years movie releases by reflecting back on what I felt were most enjoyable.
It is fair to say most will not agree with me, although most I know have called 2011 a horrific year for movies. I fail to agree. It has been tough choosing on what I believe was a great year for our cinemas.
(In no particular order)

X -Men: first class: An extraordinary return to the X - Men series. A return that led us back in time if you like. 1962 was the birth of the first hybrid of mutants. Besides from the plot, which was brilliantly based around the brink of world war 3, the addition of James Mc Avoy as the young Charles and Eric Fassbender as Magneto turned out to be the back bone of the movie. We got an amazing insight into the friendship that once was, and how a clash of personalities led to Charles Xavier and Magneto creating the X-Men saga, as archenemies. The movie also gave us an exquisite insight into the characters of teenage mutants, such as storm, mystique, and Beast. My favourite addition to X-Men origins was Kevin Bacon, who plays a Sebastian Shaw. Sebastian was your typical bad guy. Who better could you have chosen to round of what turned out to be a fantastic movie!

Rise of the planet of the Apes: Judging from the breathtaking release of the first official trailer, this was a movie that could have went horribly wrong...or surprisingly good. My verdict? was certainly better than good, Rise of the apes was an amazing creation of a saga that critics were waiting so eagerly to slate. Honestly I never did have much knowledge of the original trilogy. An to be honest again, they look terrible. My first introduction to planet of the apes was when Mark Wahlberg found himself unwanted by a bunch a angry apes back in 2001. I discovered even that version failed to get the best of reviews. I enjoyed it. I mean Tim Burton made the huge step up from what was clearly monkey clothes to full on costumes and make up. In fact, my opinion? he made the apes look ten times as real! So without going off subject, like I kind of did already, Rise of the Apes starred James Franco and John Lithgow and Andy Sekis (Caesar the Ape). A fantastic movie which gave us mind blowing CGI. It was brilliant and original to have the star of a movie be an Ape. We got a class insight into the mind of Caesar and the intelligence that comes with it after he learns of the experimental drug supplied by owner Will. The drug, intended to cure alzheimers', finds the hands of some mistreated apes, that leads to serious, yet entertaining consequences.

Crazy Stupid Love: Without being hugely convinced of Steve Carell's talent on screen? a movie that involved himself and Ryan Gosling was a genius creation. Cal, played by Carell is suddenly heartbroken after his wife (Julian Moore) confesses to cheating. Cal eventually gives himself no option but to leave the home, with the possibility of divorce. Obviously heart broken, he is discovered down in the dumps by Jacob (Gosling). Jacob is a hotshot. A ladies man who knows nothing other than playboy language and offers to teach Cal how to talk the talk, and the walk. The movies genius comedy arouses when it is clear Cal knows absolutely nothing about women after being married for a whopping 20 years. Crazy stupid love avoided full on slapstick comedy which made the movie ever more brilliant. It's touch of drama and every day incidents gave it that feel good factor, with some heartbreaking scenes. The comedy was never full on and succeeded in bringing out the true talents in Steve Carell. A cast of Kevin Bacon and Emma stone gave the movie a fantastic touch.

Warrior: A movie, based on the fasted growing sport we have today, MMA. Tom Hardy plays Tommy, the younger brother of Brendan played by Joel Edgerton. The two brothers, both struggling in different ways, see the light when an MMA tournament is advertised, offering the biggest purse in the history of the sport. The father, played by Nick Nolte arrives on the scene to discover both brothers have manged to avoid each other since Tommy's return from the army. Warrior just might be my favourite movie this year. This was a fantastic movie that blew previous fighting movies out of the water. The acting from Tom Hardy and Joel was amazing, not forgetting a brilliant performance from Nick Nolte. A movie based on broken family's, dream chances, and extraordinary events, makes Warrior a peach of a movie. The plot, besides from the obvious, feeds us with real in dept stories to the lives of the fortunate, and the not so. Director Gavin O' Connor made a wise decision in developing a fighting movie away from boxing. I believe with the UFC growing every year, it has finally taken over what once was the home of the great Muhammed Ali, that was boxing.

Drive: Every once in a while an actor comes along with great ambition and imagination, one who clearly has that wise choice of movie. He knows the trick to successful acting and wouldn't hesitate to spit in the face of someones idea of a poor movie. Ryan Gosling, possibly the greatest actor of our generation stars in Drive.  To be honest, Drive had as much a plot as Bambi did. That was the genius concept we were greeted with. Gosling plays a hired driver, taking on any kind of job ( illegal of course) an he is sure to get you outta there before the cops arrive. If not, " He is all yours". Driver (Gosling) is a quiet, tense character. His driving at night is a secondary job to his stuntman work during the day. Things do get nasty after the introduction to Nino (Ron Pearlman) and Bernie Rose (Albert Brooks), as well as the accidental involvement of Irene (Carey Mulligan). A strange movie that can't be described in words. The trailer on it's release was quality. It gave away a different movie that viewers initially intended to see. The violence came as a suprise but the viewer will leave afterwards relising it blended well with the tension in the storyline. Drive is accompanied by a nice 80's retro soundtrack that made it all the more enjoyable as we watched Driver do his work. Ryan Gosling is by far my favourite actor today, who starred in two of my favourite movies this year. Brilliant.

(I wanted to add a plus 1. The simple reason being the lack of great horror movies over the years made this one an instant classic I just couldn't avoid adding to my favourites of 2011)

Insidious: Insidious is a a gripping horror based around the family of a young boy who suddenly falls into a mysterious coma. Patrick Wilson plays the father Josh, and wife Renai is played by Rose Byrne. The young boy Dalton is led into the coma after exploring the attic of their new home only to find himself struck by what seems to be a paranormal demon. The terrifying story begins from there as a demon seems to stalk the boy seeking to capture him from the coma he lies in. Without saying too much on the events, this was, by far my favourite horror of the past few years. The last great horror that made me jump from my skin was "Drag me to hell", a remake by Sam Raimi. Those who love the old school style of the horror genre would adore that movie, released in 2009. Insidious was successful in touching off that old school, spine-tingling experience. Honestly? I was shook for a good two nights. The fact that I failed to stop thinking about Insidious clearly told me that this was a quality horror movie. The future of horror movies does not seem to hold anything like Insidious. My advice to you is see this, embrace it with enjoyment and chills as it will be a long time before anything will scare you like Insidious!

The Thing Review 2011

The Thing. Not John Carpenters cult classic, but an apparent prequel to the original. Let's face it, last year when myself, as well as most heard of a new release of the Thing? automatically I thought, okay, another horror remake. Horror remakes, or any remake if you like have an awful habit of staying a float in the sink for a good hour or so before quickly releasing the plug as we watch, happily, as it flows down the drain! It surprised me a couple of days ago before seeing the movie that they had set it out to be a prequel to the first. That was the reason I decided to push myself into seeing it without having to judge it based on John Carpenter's version.

So here we go. Kate Llode (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is a graduate student who some how finds herself tagging along side a Dr Sander Halvorson, who's played by Ulrich Thomsen. The two, also accompanied by a group of scientists and pilots are held together at an Antarctica Research facility (a couple a miles from the 1982 base might I add).

It becomes clear that Dr Sanders is after something not yet known to the rest of the crew. The movie eventually lifts off after they discover the alien life form frozen in one giant ice cube! The find quickly lights up the eyes of Sanders as he sees this as a great discovery that could possible get his name down in history. Himself and the scientist pitch an idea of moving the alien from outside into a Lab inside were they can run some tests and try discover what exactly they are dealing with.

Kate, who seems paranoid over the idea of running tests on the alien creature quickly makes it known to Sanders about her feelings and safety. We get introduced to Carter (Joel Edgerton) who is a pilot for the facility. Kate turns to Carter after failing to talk to Sanders out of his plans. According to Dr Sanders, they have made the discovery of a life time as he fails to understand why Kate is blind to that.

A good half hour into the movie was all it took for the Thing to be left alone. The crew had left it out back, still in the ice cube. I am guessing to let the ice melt? Then Boom! the Thing is released and goes on a rampage. The idea of it's agility to kill and transform by embracing human cells is quality. It was nice to see it keep the same isolated scene...kind of like in Alien? Were in space it said no one can here you scream? yeah, kind of along the lines of that. But not as amazing...obviously. The idea of any group of people being picked off one by one by anything always makes for an entertaining movie.

The CGI in the Thing, was in fact horrific. There was one part, without saying, that was pretty decent, but the rest was hideous. In modern day effects in movies, especially one that's supposed to involve a gruesome looking alien? they should have done miles better with the look of the Thing. I did not want to rub off the original too much, although I might have had already, but the director labelled it a prequel? A lot of what you see in this is exactly what you will find in the 1982 version.

As for characters, there is no one in this movie that you grow to like, or even dislike. They are all quite anonymous. Joel Edgerton, who is clearly supposed to be the equivalent to Kurt Russel's character just never takes off. It is fair to say Joel is the best actor in the movie, but in fairness most of the characters never got a look in. My point is there was never a character in the movie you find yourself rooting for. Maybe the Thing? but that's it.
Overall the movie stuck to some important spectacles of the original. The chilling base isolated in the middle of the Antarctica definitely succeeded in adding horror to the movie. I was delighted to still hear the creepy tune that plays through-out the movie. There were scenes I did find myself jumping to, to be honest. The cinema can do that to you sometimes!

So fans of the 1982 classic might find this movie hard to avoid. I would advise them to see it to judge themselves. The Thing is also for any horror fans just looking for a good scare mixed with the entertainment of watching humans get splattered! This was in no way a bad movie, but unfortunately fails to be anything other than mediocre.

I believe, if this was meant as a prequel? it should have been giving a title, with a title. So instead it is just the Thing? just like, the Thing in 1982. But hey, don't be fooled...apparently it isn't a remake.

A horror movie that is worth a watch, but don't expect to remember it after your next movie of choice.

Twilight:Breaking Dawn Review 2012

The blood thirsty saga continues with the fourth in the twilight trilogy, Breaking Dawn part 1.

The love story evolves ever more between Edward and Bella as they both continue to fight off surrounding personalities in a desperate bid to be together. As always, wolf boy slash action man wanna be Jacob goes from jealousy to anger when he receives a wedding invitation, regarding Edward and Bella.

Things spiral out of control as the plot of this story trys making sense by engaging in a storyline the viewer might possibly but not nearly relate to (sarcastic tone). Bella finds out not long after the wedding that she is pregnant....with a vampire,...for a vampire! I mean Edward! So without spoiling much (without much to spoil) Bella and the Cullen family are caught up in a desperate fight against the wolf pack, as word quickly spreads about Bella's strange situation.

Jacob, considering himself the leader of the wolf pack, comes to the conclusion of making sure Bella does not give birth as it could end up killing his childhood sweetheart. So all in all, with Bella being pregnant for the wolf packs' fierce enemy, and continuous misery brought on to poor Jacob, this could only mean an all out war between Vampires and wolves right? WRONG! Because we already got that jazz in the first three movies. Breaking Dawn offers the Twilight fan more fake romance, dull humour with a bloody concept that will disturb the average human brain.

The acting was terrible. I won't lie, Iv seen the previous movies, and although I hated the build up and madness surrounding them, they were not that bad (I could possibly regret saying that!) Breaking Dawn however left me feeling horrible with a total waste of life. My reason for seeing it was the obvious, yet a useless excuse that was, I had seen the previous movies.

Unfortunately Breaking Dawn Part 1 clearly means a part 2 is on the way. It will be the sequel of the century that one must AVOID as the End of Breaking Dawn as well as the full 100mins left me feeling nothing but shear hatred for Robert Pattinson and Kirsten Stewart. I would fail to understand why twlights' biggest fanatics could even enjoy this trash. There is no hiding the fact Robert pattinson's apparent good looks seems to attract the biggest viewers, but he has the acting skills of a snail.

So as a general movie buff or Twilight Fanatic, what have you made of it?  By the way, my opinion was far from your typical male view because I can admit to half enjoying the previous ones. But when you continue to Have Mr Pattinson's presence in such a dragged out trilogy... the future for his acting, and the saga will equal to nothing less than termination.
Hasta La Vista...Baby!!!

A classic Movie, A classic trailer

Possibly up there with one of the greatest movies every made. They simply do no not make movies like this anymore, even trailers this disturbing don't exist in todays cinemas. This trailer frightens the viewer in to seeing the movie...something they lack in the movie industry in 2012.

BRING BACK THE TERMINATOR TO OUR CINEMAS!

L.A rapper Game and City Lads, The Original Rudeboys tear up the Olympia theatre

The Game returned to Dublin City's Olympia theatre last night along with rising stars,The Original Rudeboys.

It was 3 years since L.A rapper and former G.unit member The Game was last seen on Irish soil. In 2008 he played the Olympia theatre in front of a sold out crowd. Unfortunately, me being a big Game fan,I missed that one. I did catch him a year or two prior at the Ambassador theatre, once again at the heart of Dublin City and I can honestly say it was, at the time, one of the best rap gigs I have ever attended.

I was fortunate to attend the gig at the Olympia theatre with a cracking box seat ticket (ringside I suppose). Dublin City lads Sean Arkins, Robert Burch and Sean Walsh led the way, supporting The Game as the up and coming accoustic/hiphop group, The Original Rudeboys. The band, which brings a mixture of Irish rap from Sean Arkins, acoustic guitar and vocals supplied by Robert Burch as well as Sean Walsh, who gives off a nice touch with his precious ukulele. The local group from the heart of town aren't shy of crowds at this stage, after playing numerous venues and festivals such as Reading in England and supporting G.unit at the Waterford festival. Songs such as "Live your Life", "Crazy" which is their own unique version to Cee lo Green's Crazy, and "Stars in my Eyes",their first release and a Youtube sensation, all went down well with, what looked like a sold out Gig!
The three townies looked more comfortable than ever on stage filling which what could only be described as big boots as the Main act, The Game was yet to follow. It was clear people from all over turned up to lend support to Ireland's next generation of superstars with The Original Rudeboys having none other than a bright future ahead of them.

The Game appeared on stage around 9.20 pm after an eager wait from the crowd. I must admit I could see myself as well as others were starting to lose patience! He eventually arrived...late, as these rappers tend to do but in the end it was all worth it. "The City" was the Introduction song which is the first on his most recent album, "Red". He was dressed in what I can only describe as "on the way to the Gym clothes", but someone of his swagger pulled it off, easily. The Red album is his fourth studio release so he played through songs such as "Goblins vs Martians" which features Lil Wayne and Tyler the creator, and "Ricky", a hardcore rap song which features a well put together mix from the classic movie "Boyz in the hood".

He went on to keep it old school as he played some of his most successful songs like "Dreams", "No more fun and games" and "Higher", all taken from his first album The Documentary. I can't help but get into the events surrounding his performance. At one stage he called up all the people in the crowd wearing Red and let them all bounce around the stage with him. Another dude in the crowd got specifically called upon after The Game had noticed the amount of tattoos the young guy had, leaving him and Game on stage comparing tattoos as well as getting the chance to rap with Game on one of his songs which looked quiet an experience for the teenage fan. His Entourage clearly loves Irish women as every so often they would just randomly call girls up to dance on stage.

The Game mixed it up with songs from his previous albums "The Doctors Advocate" and "LAX".
"My Life", also featuring Lil Wayne, and the banging "One Blood" almost blew the roof off the Olympia!

He threw in the occasional I love Ireland and it's the best place he ever performed at jazz. The thing about the Game it seems he really is a genuine guy and does show genuine love to the crowd and really knows how to put on a show. Since The Game started performing in Ireland over the success of his career, never has he been judged badly on performance. He brought nothing less than a fantastic performance as well as the entourage he had on stage with him who cared to join in on the chaos! The Game had this little apprentice with him the name avoids me now but at one stage near the end he climbed his way up to the first balcony before leaving the crowd anticipating weather he is going to jump or not. The security in the Olympia theatre did try and prevent him until the Game demanded they let him jump! He shouted "Let him go, I don't think ya'l know who run shit here. If you don't let him jump nobody here is going home" he eventually jumped feet first (with Air Jordans might I add).

"Pot of Gold" featuring Chris Brown was the last song he played. He dedicated it to anyone who is searching for that dream and to not give up until you have found it. The crowd did demand one more song and so Game played "Pot of Gold" again!

The night was full of entertainment and I really enjoyed the gig as I am sure most did.. The Game and The Original Rudeboys put on the performance expected of them.

Show your support this Friday 25th as The Original Rude Boys launch their first single "Stars in my Eyes"on physical CD. They will be in Tower Records off Grafton Street meeting fans and signing copies of the single. The CD will contain three versions of the song.

Batman: Arkham City PS3 Review

Rocksteady studios, Warner Bros and DC all pitch in once again to gift us with the highly anticipated sequel to Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City.

We were first given a taste of the next generation of Batman games back in 2009 when Rocksteady studios released Arkham Asylum. Batman gets himself into a right mess after capturing The Joker and returning him back to were he belongs, with the rest of the nutters at Arkham Asylum. We find out as we continued through, that the Joker, played by the brilliant Mark Hamill, had a devious plan all along. It isn't long before he gets free and goes on to run riots around Arkham Asylum, leaving Batman caught up in a game of Cat and Mouse. A genius game, and a great comeback from previous unsuccessful Batman games. The game, for ps3 and Xbox 360, received quality reviews and later went on to win the Bafta game of the year award.

Arkham City had a lot to live up to. Trailers before its release showed us the Landscape Batman was free to roam, and the villains you as Batman would come up against. It gave off, to me a slight hint that the crumbling of all of Batman's greatest villains into one game can come off rushed and unsuccessful......was Arkham City rushed or did it seem to me it failed to live up to the first? HELL NO!

The game introduces Dr.Hugo Strange. The genius behind the Arkham City prison. He controls everything from one room. For some apparent reason, he was given permission to store Gotham city's most dangerous criminals in a deserted Island outside Gotham.
The introduction to the game is quality. You find out that Hugo strange knows the identity of Batman, but he does not seem like he wants to tell others.....its like a dark secret they both chose to share with each other, and Bruce Wayne gives off the impression he trusts Hugo strange, although deep down Bruce knows there could possibly be something else strange is after?

Arkham Asylum was very original and although Arkham city is a sequel? it definitely manages to stay original. I mean, a brief list of who your up against. You have the Joker (obviously) again with the voice of mark Hamill. Harley Quinn, who never seems to fail as Jokers female apprentice. The penguin. Now the penguin seemed strange to me. He has this English accent, a very weird one at that. I would a loved to see Batman ask him what part of England he's from? anyway that one is new to me. Not forgetting the heartless Two-face, and the chilling Mr.Freeze (notice how I put chilling!?)

There is a few surprise villains I won't get into (I am trying to remain spoiler free!). Oh' and not forgetting the introduction of Catwomen which is also cool. I did find Catwomen frustrating though. Obviously she is not as strong as the Bat, but she does have little advantages. I definitely found the Hard difficulty I picked only came into play whenever the story moved onto Catwomen.

The combat in the game is just as good as the last, if not better.! Its definitely quicker, weather your Batman or Catwomen (I am yet to try Robin), you can perform a high combination of kicks and punches, resulting in a ridiculous amount of points when your doing the challenge maps. I think the highest I got was during the story mode, it was like a 24 hit combo? Apparently you can double that...if your good!

Once you complete the story, the rest of the game focuses around side missions. I have not completed the game long, and besides from doing one or two of the side missions,  it seems a great new concept added to the game and will certainly keep you going for a while. Then there is a wide range of challenge maps. Extra Content such as Knightwing and Robin challenge maps can be downloaded on the playstation store.

Another good thing fans will enjoy is that Batman is strapped with all of his gadgets from the very start....after you break free as Bruce Wayne of course! The concept of upgrading gadgets and different moves is still there. Those who enjoy using their points to upgrade, will love it, although you can get through the story mode without having to add much to your belt. As for the overall percentage of the game, those who plan on doing the numerous amount of side missions, will need to upgrade their gadgets in order to get to out of bound locations.

As for graphics. I am all for graphics in a game, where in Arkham City's case, are quiet good. hey? it is no uncharted, but it will get there if continues on from it's predecessors. The view of the city when your creeping off a one a them gargoyle statues? is quality! as for the basics such as gliding around Arkham city stalking henchmen and helping people, it looks very well. It matches the same graphics as Arkham asylum, in my opinion, which definitely is not a bad thing. Gamesmaster magazine gave it 68 to 70 percent for graphics which might be a bit harsh. just a bit. As for Xbox and Pc? I couldn't tell you. My guess is it might look slightly better on the likes a them two consoles as great games for Ps3 can sometimes come off glitchy.
It is hard to fault Arkham city, given the gritty concept Rocksteady came with. It is everything Batman should be. As a batman fan I wanted more story, longer and even more unpredictable as it already was. It was a short game. Just like Arkham city, but maybe I just enjoyed it so much that the fun was over before I could say "To the bat cave"!!

So Arkham City did not seem the longest game in the world but hey? isn't that what the side missions are for? Unfortunately I found Batman's worst enemies, as sick as their reputation holds, for me they failed to give Batman a real challenge. The side missions are one of very few advantages over Arkham Asylum. And the feature of Killer Croc and The Scarecrow in the story of Arkham Asylum are the advantages over Arkham City. But speculation is I could come across one a these two in the side missions? who knows.

Arkham City is a classic Batman game! They used so much in it that I am afraid to say they probably will not come back with a third....But fans will definitely rest on the fact that both Arkham City and Asylum will go down with some of the greatest games to hit the playstation 3.

A must play for all Batman fans! 9/10

All Eyez On Him: An Inspiring Reflection

All Eyez on me:  was the double platinum album released by Tupac Shakur in 1996. This album would be his most successful. This album would also be his last before his murder. This album was, what I believe, the Death of Tupac Amaru Shakur.
When Tupac shot to fame way back in 1991 with his first official album, 2pacalypse now, I was three years old. Unfortunately I didn’t understand Hip hop at that age, in fact music in general did not seem to excite my ears! I never really had a song growing up that really had an effect on my life, but I do remember my mother playing Simply Red and Bon Jovi in the mornings. So I suppose the effect they might have had on me is to share an opinion on them as artists, and to me, now, I think Jon Bon Jovi and Simply Red are Magnificent!
When the boy band era came around some years later, the likes of Backstreet boys and five?  for me, they shared music to my ears. I liked them two bands in particular. As for Love of music, I was not there yet.  Around the year 2000/01 was when I first appreciated an artist before his music.
Tupac Shakur had been dead almost 5 years by then.  I had a lot of catching up to do, as I was one of those people who knew the famous song “Changes”, so any knowledge of Tupac after that was out the window!

From 1992 onwards, Tupac Shakur released 4 successful albums.  2pacalypse now - Strictly for my Niggaz – Me against the world – All eyez on me (2 disc).

The album was released in 1996. It was inspired by hatred, love and betrayal. Tupac Shakur was serving a two year jail sentence for false accusations involving a female fan in a hotel room. This was a rape charge he strongly denied in the year before his death.

A deal was agreed with Death Row records owner Suge Knight to bail out Tupac Shakur on the condition he signs a contract with them, the agreement was to record three records, the first being  All eyes on me. The contract, signed upon his release was according to some, “A deal with the devil”, the devil being Suge Knight of Death Row Records.
This was the album I came upon some years later. It introduced me to Tupac and what he was about. It also introduced me to real rap music, the meaning of it and the path Tupac took to success, as well as numerous artists in the rap game at that stage.

The first song on the album, “Ambition as a rider”, was an instant classic which was later moved to the two disc greatest hits album released in 1997. The song still sends shivers down my spine as Tupac shakur describes his reputation, reincarnation and his wish to have things his way.  My murderous lyrics woke up the spirits of the thugs before me stay off the block evading cops cause I know they coming for me”  The song is a great intro to an album that clearly affected his views on society after his stint in prison.

“Skandalous “ featuring recently deceased rapper Nate Dogg, touches on untrustworthy women, asking you to reconsider who you trust because fame and money can get you into a hell of a lot of trouble, hence the charge Tupac was convicted previous.

The album was the next generation of rap music. Its originality was genius and no one dared talk about the stuff Tupac did in his two disc masterpiece.
Tupac’s signing to Death Row records unfortunately showed his greed, and greed definitely played a part in the album. He knew all eyes were on him, and he would let no one bring him down again, even though he himself knew that this might be his last album. His paranoia was blowing up as well as his head.  My own mama say im thugged out, my shit be poppin out the record store as if it was a drug house”  (You Can’t see me) .

A personal favourite of mine, is one that I can’t relate to in any way, but one that hit me. “Trading war Stories”  is a song featuring his group, the Outlawz. This song defines Tupac and what he is about. He describes his fight with society, jealousy,  gang members and the hard knock life of growing up. It’s not meant to be a sad heartfelt song, but when I listen to it, I get emotional.
Like a lot of his songs I just think, its a brutal world when someone who found so much success from growing up in poverty can be just taken away in the blink of an eye. “Now can your mind picture, a thug nigga drinking hard liquor, this ghetto life has got me catching up to god quicker, who thought all I need was a hair trigger semi automatic mack eleven just to scare niggas!”

Tupac Shakur always had a sensitive side to his lyrics, and that is how a lot of his classics were formed. He expressed his passion for women and children on the album and a fair society for all cultures. He learned from the great Malcom X and Martin Luther King. His knowledge is heard through his music and read through his poetry.  “Wonder why they call you bitch” is a beautiful song aimed at lower class black women, who get treated badly for all the wrong reasons, but sometimes bring it on themselves. In this song Tupac pleads with the women to hear him out and listen to the reason, that most of them are indeed labelled by most rap artists as Bitches.
See he said you were sleazy? Even easy sleeping around for what you need, see its your thing and you can shake it how you wanna, give up free or making money on the corner, don’t be bad play the game, get mad at change then you wonder why these mothafuckers call you names, I can see ya looking for a way out? It’s okay I can see you in a stray there’s a way out.”

Another Example of Tupac’s sensitive side, an iconic song, “I ain’t mad at ya” is based on the appreciation Tupac shows towards a friend or someone who has moved on and left the ghetto to pursue better things, and someone who lives the life, money, drugs and women don’t live the perfect life and does all come to an end eventually,  giving Tupac inspiration to consider a better life, away from gang life and petty ghettos.  “It seems my homey is a changed man, hit the pen and no sinning is the game plan, when I talk about money all you see is the struggle when I tell you im living large you tell me it’s trouble, congratulations on the wedding, I hope your wife know, she got a player for life and that’s no bull shitting!”

Rather than Tupac’s vision on gang life and poverty, this album, like many, also gives the time to reflect on Love and every day affairs. Example of his love towards certain characters is “Dear Mama”(Greatest Hits), which is a personal favourite for most who appreciate their mother,” Neva call you Bitch again” (Better Dayz)  an amazing song directed as an apology to women who were taken advantage of.

“Mamas Just a little girl “(Better Dayz) is a beautiful story describing his own mother and the struggle she went through.  Then there is “Changes”, a popular one even to people unfamiliar with tupac’s work, this song goes down a treat. The concept of this song is brilliant as Tupac pleads for a change in American society.

The All eyez on me album started it all for me. It inspired me to learn more about Tupac. I went on to read his poetry, biographies and movies.  He was a great writer and actor. His acting and writing has inspired a tremendous amount of rappers to follow in his path to success. Fans will always argue over Tupac’s best album. This one was most successful in gross and the charts. But to compare it to everything Tupac has done is a tough one.

The release of the album in 1996 certainly made Tupac, but also killed him. His paranoia showed in the album as well in interviews leading up to his death.  There is no doubt in my mind that Tupac wanted out of Death Row records after the album release, he just didn’t know how. He had several unreleased songs tied in with Suge Knight at Death Row records. Tupac had ambitions to set up his own Record label and take all his unreleased songs with him.  Unfortunately Suge Knight knew of Tupac’s desire to leave the label. I believe, like many, that Suge would in no way have let Tupac leave after the money the album brought to his record label.

When Tupac shakur was gunned down on the Las Vegas strip in 1996, Death row got all the rights to tupac’s songs. They got just what they wanted.  Thankfully in the end, Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur fought and won the rights back for most of Tupac’s songs and has went on to release a further 6 albums containing all new Material by the man himself.

Tupac Shakur believed in his paranoia and saw his death coming. The guy was a genius in preparing a legacy before his time had come. He wanted to live on through his music, and that, to this day what is happening. That contract he signed with the devil back in 1996 proved to be a fatal move....but like Bob Marley, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, Tupac Shakur will remain forever.

Straw Dogs Movie Review 2011

James Marsden and Kate Bosworth star in the 1970's violent remake, Straw Dogs.

The movie takes place in modern Mississippi in the south of America, where loved up couple David (Mardsen) and Amy (Bosworth) return from Miami where they had met previous. David is a screenplay writer who writes for low budget movies back in Miami and is keen on settling down for some peace and quiet once they arrive in the small town of Mississippi. Amy appears to be a popular character in her home town as she is welcomed with more than open arms once they arrive.

We then meet Charlie (Alexander Skarsgard) who grew up with Amy. He shows a great obsession for Amy and is more than happy to see her return home. Once he finds out she is happily married to David.....we see a dramatic change in his persona.

David is a genuine guy who worked hard to get to were he is. He wants nothing more than to settle down on his laptop and write. He is perceived by the residents of the town to be cocky, arrogant and flashy with his cash. David is introduced to his new neighbours in one scene when he stops off for a beer in the local bar, a ruffed up shack might I add that looks like one of those places from a western with the small doors!!

There we meet Tom (James Woods) who coaches the local football team. Tom is a horrible racist, a profane character. I mean this guy is a right Mercenary! You get the feeling of Tom's reputation when he starts pulling his own pints! It seems the locals fear Tom, some such as Charlie (Skarsgard) and his gang will quickly obey him.

The plot moves off when David offers Charlie and his group of workers the job of revamping the roof behind their house. As much as Charlie needs the money, he also sees this as an opportunity to be closer to Amy.

David, who is bewildered to the real reason for Charlie taking the job soon regrets his decision. The group of workers are your typical bunch of perverts who have absolutely no intention of getting the roof done by the specific deadline. This Leaves Amy feeling uncomfortable in her own home as numerous incidents lead to both David and Amy having arguments over David's lack of courage towards Charlie and his men.

Unfortunately I have not seen the Original Straw Dogs with Dustin Hoffman so I can't compare this version to the 1971 classic. But I must say I really enjoyed this movie, it is hard not too say too much about this remake. Straw Dogs does have a slow start but when David and Amy finally settle down, the consequences are crucial.

This is a pure Bad vs evil movie. According to what I have read, the original version has a shocking rape scene. To be honest if it is any more graphic than the remake's scene, I do not fancy it. I mean you feel for Kate's character Amy! She honestly receives an awful time.

Charlie and football coach Tom are a force to be reckoned with. They will not tolerate any hotshot coming to their town and settling down in a hurry. These two are heartless monsters! You feel for David because you want him to man up and protect his wife and new home. Unfortunately that is where my problem was with the movie. It took too long for David to finally crack. And as much as I love the "Everyone has a breaking point" slogan on the poster? for me, anyone else would have cracked a lot sooner if that was real life....even a wimp like me!

Overall Straw Dogs was entertaining. James Mardsen surprised me, he showed some really impressive acting in my opinion, I mean when he finally does man up, you really root for him aginst the scum in the movie! And we have to remember this is Cyclops from X-Men......

As for Kate Bosworth I felt was superb on her own, I am not too convinced on the romance between the two of them though. The creep, Charlie was okay. He basically just had to play a violent hunk with a six pack and a great fan of women....women with whimpy husbands that is! He would never pick on someone is own size, that's for sure! And can't forget James woods, I will be honest I did not even know he was in the movie. Thank god he was because he was excellent. He was a rotten delinquent but it worked.

So for me, someone who is yet to see the original, I enjoyed Straw Dogs. Unfortunately I think most people will disagree with me because of it's birth place but give it a go. It's gruesome, creepy, and disturbing all in one! With a surprising performance from Cyclops....I mean James Mardsen.!

Paranormal Activity 3 Review 2011

Another year, yet another guy decides setting up cameras in the family home is a great idea.... in Paranormal Activity 3.

When Paranormal Activity first came to our screens in 2007, it brought something very different and unique. The frightening story based on supernatural occurrence in a house occupied by loved up couple Katie and Micah who are both haunted by an unseen presence. On the release, the movie grossed in at around 190,000,000.

Without touching on the sequel too much, let us just say it failed to live up to the success of the first movie. Upon its release in 2010, the sequel pretty much gave us the same thing but adding one or two more impressive camera tricks.

Paranormal Activity 3 takes us back to 1988...as you might of seen in the trailer, how it all began! Two Sisters Katie and Kristi are toddlers who begin to experience the happenings in their family home, where it appears the younger of the two Katie befriends a spirit in the house....unfortunately for her, it ain't Casper!

According to Katie, her demonic friend goes by the name of Toby. We do not get to see much of this Toby of course because the parents seem to think that Katie, who we see talking to herself (Toby...) is so young that she will grow out of it, how wrong they were!

Anyways, noises get louder by the night, and frames drop from the wall, the usual jazz. Like the first two, the father (Why always the man?) starts thinking, hang on? somethings not right here, let's set up some cameras and see what we get, and what we get is indeed some hair-raising stuff!

Once the cameras are in location around the house, it really does get Chilling. I will not lie, I was terrified. When the father sets up one camera to one a them old battery fans that go side to side really slowly? you are left anticipating what is about to happen as its making its way back to the left...or right!

I must admit, the camera tricks in this one are exquisite. It definitely blows the first two out of the water with its haunting effects and its life like presence of the demon. Paranormal activity 3 does a good job convincing viewers that you just never know if the occurrences in the movie can actually happen to you.....?

As much as I might have made out Paranormal Activity 3 to be a good movie, I must point out for viewers to expect the worst ending you can possibly imagine. If I am correct I am pretty sure it was meant to be some sort of twist.....me? I was unconvinced, ridiculous!

Unfortunately as much as I enjoy a good scare, and the movie was successful in that way, the Paranormal Activity franchise is and always will be a cinematic experience only. Anyone hoping to get a good thrill from a DVD version will be hugely disappointed. I believe seeing the trilogy is a once off only and I have no future plans of renting or buying either parts of the haunting series.

Overall, Paranormal Activity is a good time. It definitely had me shook, and to be honest I can't remember much of the first to say this was better or scarier if you like? But it was more entertaining than part two, that's for sure. The two little kids were creepy, and I must admit, they both played scared really well! As for the father (Stepfather), he as usual was a brave idiot, and the mother was as usual, clueless to what was going on!

So go see it in the cinema, don't waste your time illegal downloading (Like what you kids tend to do!) or waiting for it to be released on DVD because it just isn't the same experience. Paranormal Activity must be watched in a big black room with surround sound and screaming women, or in my case...MEN!

Same old stuff, just that little bit more frightening! :)

Contagion Movie Review 2011

Contagion, Directed by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven trilogy) and starring Matt Damon along with an awesome cast including Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne and your bit on the side, Gweneth Paltrow.

The Story kicks off with a bang when Beth (Paltrow) returns home from a business trip in Hong kong and begins to suffer from severe sickness that she tends to pass off as a bad flu.

The cause of the infection is unknown to her and husband Mitch (Damon).

The Infection takes a turn for the worse when Beth collapses and is hospitalized under severe protection as even the doctors seem bewildered to the cause of the sickness. Mitch gets his life turned upside down when he receives the tragic news that his wife had unexpectedly passed away with the cause of death unsolved.

Contagion gives a great plot to start with. A deadly virus that is rapidly spreading through America and the world. Scientists, Doctors, disease control, all seem confused when members of the public start dropping dead. The people you think might know the cause of death? Have literally no idea of the decent, or gravity this infection can have.....

It isn't long before the public get word of mouth about the killer virus, sending many into shear panic. Alan (Jude Law), a hilarious individual who labels himself a journalist, but many see him as a controversial character with nothing better to be doing than sitting around all day blogging.

Alan is your typical journalist, he is arrogant, inappropriate, and always looks to eavesdrop. Alan seems to get into trouble all the time, but when he claims to have a cure for this virus, all hell breaks loose.

On the opposite side is Dr.Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) and Irina (Daria Strokous?)
Dr.Cheever has his co.worker Irina hot on the trails of the virus, hoping to discover a cure, while at the same time trying to prevent herself from the sickness, as the death toll rises everyday.

The movie takes place in numerous locations telling the stories of people struggling to deal with the loss of family members, to the doctors and scientists under pressure to keep the story out of the media.

I felt Contagion could have done better. The introduction to the movie was quality, a great piece of acting, as we get a glimpse of the affliction the deadly virus will have through out. My only problem was I don't think it carried that same affection it had at the start.

The movie had a great first half, with extreme tensity and realism, along with superb acting from Matt Damon and Gweneth Paltrow, but the movie needed more Gweneth Paltrow.

When I say it had superb acting, I mean from all of the cast, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne and Daria Strokous were all quality. I just wanted more from the movie, more action and less fussing around! It Just wasn't  there for me.

So Contagion was decent to watch. I would not tell anyone to avoid, simply because of the actors involved.

The story was a great idea, very original, but do not expect to remember it 24 hours later. The End of the movie killed it for me, I won't go into the end of the movie right now though! :)

Good plot, Great actors, got boring half way through, and I believe the end was rushed!

overall. 6/10

Do we really need another Remake??

"The Thing"Remake 2/12/2011

Halloween is approaching and I ask myself, as a movie fan of all genres, especially Horror, do we really need another horror remake?
The past 10 years have been great for any movie fan. We have seen the different types of movies that were brought to the big screen, and most I can assume were welcomed with open arms.
Action blockbusters, comedy/Romance, hard drama and true stories.

Can we say the Horror genre has been so successful lately? I for one think not. Don’t get me wrong, we have had some new ideas of scary movies. Take the first "Saw" movie for example, which I think brought a little bit of life back to the Horror genre.

Horror movies cannot fade away as it is something that has to be continued to be produced just like Comedy and romance. Me and I am sure most have no problems with  horror movies being released as we might expect numerous ones this Halloween, even if they turn out to be crap, someone has to keep it alive.

But do we really need another Horror remake? I mean not just another one, but in general? Can’t the classics stay classics and be left alone rather than some up and coming movie director getting the privilege to revamp some movies that were good enough were they left off 20 years ago?

This Halloween will see the release of the most recent of the remakes, The Thing. Honestly I have never seen the original but I know this goes down, with many others as a horror classic.  I get what the film Industry are trying to do. Besides from the blatant obvious, which is to make money, but to also give movie fans something to be scared about this Halloween.

But Let us take look at some previous horror remakes that I am sure read like a good idea at the time but for fans, most had failed to work:

“Halloween” remake was taken on by Rob Zombie back in 2002, my favourite one of them all was hacked to bits....literally! Rob Zombie’s love for gore was always going to ruin the character of Michael Myers, and a terrible actor replacing Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie did not help either!

“Friday the 13th” which immediately went off track with its pursuit to have Jason Voorhees the serial killer instead of his Mother (the original storyline) on top of terrible acting and a desperate attempt to shear unnecessary blood!

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” which I might add was not the worst remake. Freddy was darker and scarier but struggled to improve off of the original movie that wasn’t great either. In my opinion

“Texas Chainsaw massacre, dawn of the dead, the Hitcher, the hills have eyes, and on and on and will continue to fail to live up to the original classics.

Horror movies that you can expect to see remade within the next year “IT” (the clown), Scanners, Hell raiser and Childs play....yes, Childs play! Oh and poltergeist! And I am sure many more.

So do we really need more horror remakes? Can’t the Cinemas just release a classic every year? I am sure if it did it would get a lot more views.

The Thing Remake is due out the 2nd December. This will mark another Horror movie remake that should of never been.  Judging by the trailer and the actors in it?  I am expecting more horror from the Lion King 3D! God Help us all.
