Independant Film: Adam and Paul (2004)

Like many Irish Independent movies, Adam and Paul is another we should be proud of. In my mind, it joins the list of not only one of the greatest Irish movies created, but one of the greatest movies...in general!

This short enthusiastic tale follows "a day in the life" of two heroin addicts, Adam and Paul. We watch from start to finish the journey through gritty Dublin that leads two degenerates into places unknown, yet we gather the feeling they have been in these places many times before. Adam (Mark O'Halloran) is the taller one and appears the wiser of the two, but not by much. Paul (Tom Murphy) is the delicate half a brain scapegoat who gets himself into the most unfortunate of circumstances.

Its mystified concept has an element of genius. Although constructed and viewed through the eyes of you typical "junkie", Adam and Paul is highly original and creates and focuses on the seriousness of a modern day subject and blends it with dark yet typical Dublin humour! Tied together by habit and a modern day friendship, witness as Adam and Paul resolve to desperate measures to rid of the "Cold sickness", even if it means robbing a downsyndrome kid, a brand new television and numerous attempts at stealing, which is a skill that proves yet to be mastered.

While both lads are far from pessimistic, ambitions are high as they seek their fix while at the same time trying to avoid Clank! Who? Clank; a character, in a way, they enforced on themselves!

We are not aware of any background of both these guys but an immediate perspective is endured at the intro; They wake up in a field (you know, the signature red poles?), they are wet, hungry and mind-set on their next fix! A task at hand, you travel along with Adam and Paul as they meet old friends, some genuine, others crooked and witness first hand the highs and lows (mostly lows) of your average heroin addict.

Some scenes are smartly shot, showing actual heroine based hang-outs (don't ask how I know). It is easy to watch the flow of this classic with what is honestly a brain-dead plot that in fact, you don't seem to care much for. The film simply drags you into what are likable personalities in Adam and Paul offering a touch of fine acting and some very funny scenes as it appears the longer they roam the streets without drugs, the quicker there souls seem to fade.

The fine camera shots and overall images are constructed to the point where this could pass as a documentary showing the gritty side of Dublin city. (We ain't New York, we will show that shit). The movie was created using pretty much one camera and a film budget that would struggle to afford a weeks shopping! I think that is what makes this movie so special. The amateur production clearly didn't affect the wonderful performances from both O' Halloran and Murphy, giving us an inspiring result.

The concept of this movie was to make people laugh, cry and to open the eyes of any individual who have been in a similar situation, or going down that road. It achieved a rude awakening to the Irish public to possibly see into the lives of people struggling with drug addiction. Those who have everything and those with nothing. Okay it was their own choice blah blah blah, but these are human beings...

Adam and Paul was Written by Mark O'Halloran. It is a crafty piece of Irish cinematography revealing a further extent of the continuity of film making in this country. Leonard Abrahamson won best director in 2004 at the Irish television and film awards on top of the movie being nominated in eight different categories. It was also played to an "enthusiastic audience" at the Berlin film festival. (part of the festivals programme).

Unfortunately for Tom Murphy, following successful treatments for lymphatic Cancer, he died of MRSA on October 6th 2007. A well accomplished actor by then, he was just 39 years old.
The movie is a dedication to Ireland and movie fans global, with a glowing light that sheds upon the magnificent portrayal from Tom Murphy.

Overall: Like nothing you have seen before, witness and embrace an Independent delight!

Robocop Review (1987)

The 80's was the epidemic of landmark movies. It was no doubt an era of heavy artillery supplied by Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. To name a few; Predator 87", First Blood 82", Aliens 86", The Terminator 84" and more would all go forward to rule the 1980's. Released in 1987, Robocop would have to bring something explosive to the table.

This futuristic sci-fi takes place in Detroit were crime rate is at its highest. The streets are crawling with Junkies, prostitutes while a global tech business, OCP (Omni Consumer products), over looks the city and controls the reign of law. It does not get more gritty than the portrayal we see at first hand.

OCP is known for its advanced technology and continuity in daily developments created and mastered to protecting the public from the scum. With not much belief in your average police department, it is when the giant company buys out the police task force in hopes to creating something stronger and less vulnerable as murderers and rapists pile the dark streets of Detroit.

It is when rogue cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is blasted to death during a tense infiltration into one of Detroit's cold blooded gangs, (a gruesome scene that joined movie history) that sees Bob Morton (Miguel Ferrer) of OCP perform a body transformation. With adjustments to save the general organs of Murphy's remains, the staff at OCP construct a steel shell around the dead body of Murphy resulting in a ""Robocop",a programmed walking talking killing machine assigned to protect the innocent with the ability to sustain and arrest.

While Murphy's soul is nothing short of deceased, it is when former partner and witness to the crime Lewis (Nancy Allen) discovers the man behind the metal plates resulting in Robocop's reflection of memories, which is something OCP didn't want. The action packed plot sees Bob's Robocop create a kill list behind the death of his former self. The main target is indeed, in my opinion one of the biggest dirt bags to ever hit our screens, Clarence (Kurtwood Smith). If Satan had an apprentice, it was this guy. It delights me to witness the path of revenge that Robocop follows, leading to an all out war as Clarence and his men try ridding the streets of the only thing standing in their way.

Although OCP staff and second man on the managers board Dick (Ronny Cox) represents true justice, Dick has eyes on a different future for the advanced company, a future without Robocop, which leads Robocop on an investigation that connects dots between the criminals of Detroit and the rich that overlook it.

Ah yes, the nostalgic reflection of this movie still excites me. One year before my birth, Robocop was swarming cinemas global, estimating a total of 13,000,000 in budget. Just like a plethora of 80's action, Robocop was, and still is one of the best of that era.

Its concept was highly original then, and unfortunately could not have competed with The Terminator and T2, it did succeed in terms of Sci-fi action and joined a host of movies that showed the possible gruesomeness of real-life shootings.

Scene of Death: Upon the origin of Robocop, Murphy had to make a sacrifice. Not knowing he would become a protective cyborg of Detroit, he foolishly rushed in, disturbing a group of animals, resulting in a terrifying scene. Do you remember? He had his leg, arm, and eventual head blasted with shotguns, machine guns the lot. Clarence and his affiliates were a new breed of murders and rapists, which lead to a whole new direction in my movie history. The gore was frightening and the screams of laughter toward a dead cop is more haunting.

The overall cast consisted of some well known faces of that era, if not genre of movies. In my opinion, it was just as well Peter Weller had to play out the movie in a metal suit and robotic concept as I don't think I could have stuck his cheesy acting through-out the 100 minutes or so. Although he is the hero an lead star, he is the worst actor associated with this classic... sorry. Apart from a handful of low budget movies, Weller has done the voice for Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 & Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2...random?

Ronnie Cox, as we know from Eddie Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop, was then and maybe still an accomplished actor playing numerous roles of good and bad.  Kurtwood Smith made appearances in Deep Impact, Rambo 3, Broken Arrow and many more.

Apart from its cheesy one liners, Robocop is and always will be one of my Childhood favourites. I know, it was strictly 18's (strictly), there was just no way I wasn't watching this movie. Unfortunately I can't say the same for what was to follow. I am sure the majority of fans will agree if I say that  RoboCop 2 was mediocre, although it will never, NEVER be as bad as RoboCop 3!!!  It is hardly worth referencing, but I believe the situation was played out with Peter Weller witnessing a script that read Robotic Ninjas and immediately decided to shove the pen he was given up the writers ass!

For those who don't know, a re-make is set for release in 2013, with a cast Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman and Samuel L. Jackson.  At this stage I struggle to see how anything can go wrong when the legendary Gary Oldman is involved. Joel Kinnaman is the star of the murderous tv series, The Killing. As for Samuel Jackson?...

Overall: 80's Sci-fi action, 80's bloodshed, 80's acting = a damn good time!

Killer Joe Review 2012

Just when I thought the movie industry had descended from strange minded concepts, Killer Joe turns out to be one of the most uncanny movies to ever hit our screens! Although one would cringe in admitting it is weirdly enjoyable!

The haunting thriller focuses on a trailer park in southern Texas which is home to the Smiths, a bizarre family of red-necks. Chris (Emile Hirsch) and his father Ansel (Thomas Haden Church) are far from your average father-son relationship, that is until they discover a loop-hole relating to an assurance policy consumed by Ansel's previous wife (Chris's mother). Chris who is in depth with loan sharks and a gambling addiction lacking him in favours, he receives information regarding the pot of money sitting beneath his mother, believing if something should happen her, the loot would be forwarded to his deranged sister, Dottie (Juno Temple.)

Introducing Killer Joe (Matthew McConaughey); a recluse sheriff of the law and a gun for hire. Both guys are advised on the work ethic of Joe, leading them to a hosted agreement which will see Joe kill Ansel's wife for a hefty share of the cash. However there is a catch. One that shows the true nature of Joe's perverted character. Both Ansel and Chris struggle to convince Joe of the eventual pay he will receive leaving Joe to come up with the idea of him holding a"retainer", a "keep-safe" until he receives pay. Dottie, the sibling in the family, serves as that "retainer" opening up a frightening new path to Joe's persona.

Mystified to the sadistic ways of Joe, Chris and his degenerate father can only sit by an watch as Joe's hesitation and visits to their home become more frequent. Ansel's girlfriend Sharla (Gina Gershon) is suspicious of Joe's antics but sees no reason why she shouldn't slave her step-daughter to Joe. Her greed and overall character is obvious and is revealed along with Chris and Ansel as desperate measures to receive the assurance money. What was originally a contract to assassinate, Joe's striking presence results in a sociable friendship, which was more than originally intended resulting in what Ansel believes to be a dangerous situation. Although Chris's selfishness is revealed through-out the deal, he himself is worried for the manipulation of his be-wildered family.

Killer Joe is in a category of its own; and so it should be. What starts off as a pretty direct plot, this movie takes the biscuit in terms of the ridiculousness of its immediate turn around. Without giving away too much of the original twists, Joe's dark humour and manipulation expands as his disturbed fantasies are directly shown as the movie seeks to turn ones stomach. His love for a 9 year old (or 10) takes its toll as well as a plethora of gross fantasies, the audience will settle for non-other than great despise towards both Joe and the Smith family. The family are not the brightest of red-necks and  can't help but get sucked into the mind and discomposed ways of a powerful yet insane individual in Joe.

The concept resembles that of The Devil's Rejects and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre which succeeds in drawing your attention to each character on screen, the outskirts of the dangers and typical cold bloodied Texans. Killer Joe is extremely dark and frighteningly funny, with scenes I couldn't possibly begin to describe. With a strange element of characters and a nice soundtrack, it offers some fine twists and memorable yet shocking scenes. (trust me)
Although Killer Joe offers up some fantastic performances from both Matthew McConaughey, Gina Gershon and a brave portrayal of innocence from Juno Temple, the movie itself is a simple no-brainer that might not be everyones cup of tea though one should see it for McConaughey's performance alone.

Overall: Attacks the vulnerable with its original concept, Killer Joe is extremely entertaining while testing the gag reflex of the audience.

Irish Rappers Revealed: A result of past & present

Intro - The Republic of Ireland has produced some quality talent over the past century or so; from actors, directors, musicians and athletes. I could list the names of those who have done us proud globally, but fuck that; Reeling in the years might as well be a half hour dedication to Bono's U2. Don't get me wrong, I, like most, am proud to be Irish knowing we have produced one of the best rock n roll bands ever, but in my life-time it would thrill me to see Irish Hip hop have some serious success somewhere along the line. Why? myself being Irish is an obvious statement, but because I would support any hip hop to the death a me, and so I believe if certain countries can achieve success with their artists, why can't we. Is it the accent?

Irish Rappers revealed: Born out of county Wexford, Rob Kelly recently popped back on the scene with a continuation of fine results in terms of recognition in and outside of Ireland. The origin of his hip hop career dates back to the late 80s early 90s. It was clear that Rob had a talent for rhyming while nit-picking in rap battles; a concept where the best rappers in the world have started off - Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Xzibit, Biggie etc. Rob Kelly followed no-one but himself in achieving what is a wide dose of experience under his belt. 2006 proved a successful year, yet long awaited I'm sure with the drop of his official album, Bragging Rights. Following a hand full of mix tapes, Bragging Rights would prove to be the big one, entertaining such songs as "Dropkicked" featuring Boston based MC, Slaine. Bragging Rights was the first Irish rap album I had heard. Rob Kelly is the original underground MC with a fan base ranging through-out the UK while performing numerous shows as far as Boston and Canada.

In 2005 Alan Collins, aka Collie, released his debut album “Is Ainm Dom".  What seems almost impossible, I was actually listening to a rapper with the thickest Dublin accent spit lyrics through my stereo was crazy, in a good way. It was original first off and extremely funny. He wasn't rapping about a particular hood or drive-by shooting because that didn't exist around Dublin. Sure, Gangland was always present, but instead of an origin of his own life, it was about partying, booze, daily listings, Shams and public transport! Who knows at that time whether Collie viewed his career progressing to new heights, but since then he has released several albums Collie's bandcamp  - How things Changed followed by Keep Her Lit and The aul Sod.
Redzer; a Coolock based rapper who was also lucky enough release his own debut album - Dublife. Another one of few albums I had purchased, it was slightly original in terms of story-telling and general flow. Sure, he added one or two party anthems, but Dublife was aimed at those in harsh times relating to the lack of employment, as well as continuously pointing the finger at our Government and Taoiseach at the time, Bertie Ahern. In my mind, the majority of the tracks associated greatly to genuine hip hop and the meaning behind it. It was an album that consisted of "Ups and downs", relating to good memories but yet the moral truth that in fact the country, more so now, is in a state of disaster. Redzer touched on important subjects, expressing his opinion with a fine element of lyrical flow. Some of the popular tracks on Dublife were Redzer's Be Someone; a memorable mix of Tracy Chapman's Fast Car. Play your life away (Street life) was another nice slick track featuring Collie, Ratman and Nu-Centz.

Some songs included hilarious content such as one particular track, Coolock shit; a song aimed at those to avoid Coolock! Did it pave way for another physical album; unfortunately not. Redzer has enough tracks on YouTube to cover another two albums, maybe more, but in my opinion, Redzer was just another victim of an attempt at achievement by a solo Irish hip hop artist, solo being the key word here. Redzer reforms his current work around the Class A'z; a rap group involving Nugget, Nu-Centz, Terawritz, Rawsoul, Siyo, Collie and Redzer. You can download a variety of mix-tapes from their online music store.

Nugget (Gary Nugent) is so famous when it comes to Irish hip hop it reeks the air whenever a DFI (Don’t flop Ireland) event comes around. Nugget is one of the pioneers of Irish hip hop. If he refused any such credit, it would be given to him by the people surrounding him. He was one of very few to cross the water (England) to battle one of their own, more experienced MC's in a don’t flop rap battle. Born out of Ballyfermot, Nugget is known for his bravery and witty concept bringing a republican persona where ever he travels. He is neither shy from slagging himself before you can, leaving you with nothing and him with unlimited ammunition! His exploit of web-fame has created a path for MC's after him, including Cork based MC, Nash who also made his mark on English soil. Nugget's debut album The Nugget you love to hate was released in 2006 followed by last year's Ready to diet.
The harsh reality might be: To take a note from the book of The Original Rudeboys who have recently showed that in order to be at least half successful within hip hop, there has to be a general element; that element appears to consist of a rapper, a vocalist, and a talent for the ukulele. Not necessarily those in particular of course, but an element that differs from those in a similar category. Now, not saying it's a band or nothing for the hip hop artists of our country, but look at the results. Sean "Neddy" Arkins has been writing songs since before his association with his newly formed band mates. Did he achieve success? If you include locally and YouTube, yes, but the goal he really wanted to reach? No! In fact he resolved to writing raps for fun before taken the whole band thing seriously years later.

The success of the Original Rudeboys so far has received endless praise in terms of originality and the fact they have performed at the biggest festivals, supporting the biggest acts. Although it is a band consisting of an Irish rapper, Dublin which is leading a great example, I believe there is no way Sean Arkins would have been accepted outside of Ireland with just a microphone and torso. Sure, he trends a "likable" character, but like the previous and current rappers today, he too would have struggled alone. Sean as well as Robert Burch and Sean Walsh were smart enough to sit down and create something that involves an equal interest from the band as a whole. Robert Burch (Vocalist) was playing guitar in local pubs as well as Sean Walsh picking up the Ukulele every now and then. The fact they created and blended an element of three different concepts is genius. We all know what their graft led onto; YouTube videos, Interviews, and their physical debut album This Life. It just doesn't get that big very often...they were the lucky ones.

Lethal Dialect (Paul Alwright): Anyone who doesn't recognise the MC Lethal Dialect by now has been living under a rock. His second album, LD50-2 launched in March following its predecessor, LD50, attracting hip hop fans across the country. His unique story telling is contracted by magical beats constructed by his associate and friend, GI.

I recognised LD through DFI (Don't flop Ireland) where I witnessed the most hilarious, witty ways of crushing someone with none-other than knowledgeable words. My first encounter on YouTube was LD and Rob Steenson. Rob, an inner City MC, close to where I grew up myself, was known to have a lyrical talent not only for battling but tracks consisting of numerous YouTube hits. It was that particular battle that not only got me hooked online, but gave me the sheer enjoyment of discovering of who I believe has a more realistic chance at Hip hop success. His persona speaks for itself through his gritty music, with a convincing bulk of talent, whether it pays the way or not.

I attended his last gig in The Workmans club. Apparently LD was over the moon with the turn out, I for one was very disappointed considering the raving reviews online and the fans that have fallen in love with his hip hop portrayal. In my opinion it could have been a better turn out. Those who express their interest in an artist need to support the gigs, otherwise it's quite pointless.
Rob Steenson (right) has up to 50,000 YouTube hits. His tracks consist of harsh times, deepest thoughts and personal, sometimes depressed lyrics. As I understand, he was one of the first that I came to hear of locally who took up writing tracks for recreational use. His most recent YouTube hits are Sunny Rain, Down to the river and Faithless. Obviously the times change and with himself, as well as other locals such as Neddy Arkins, who performed with one-another in the past. These lads were part of a small minority who would see the path differently as rap slowly began to grow. I am not sure if Rob and Co would agree if I had guessed that DFI had helped them slightly. Although a concept created for the so-called best battlers in Ireland to come together would more than likely create more downs than ups; as entertaining as it is to watch, I would love a perspective from someone in terms of the egotistical side. It is at the end of the day a contest, something that the average rapper would tear through to make a name for himself.

Working Class (records); A hip hop group with a convenient name consisting of Costello, GI, 4Real, William Lee, John Doe, as well as Jambo and Lethal Dialect supporting the Dublin companionship. The difference in this group a lads varies. Their take on the documentary was different, speaking on rap itself and the individuals surrounding it, while continuing to pay homage to Daniel Mc Donnell Aka Lunatic. Daniel (left) finally got the chance to grow up after moving from Dublin to England and back again to where he discovered not only his childhood in Ballymun, but his love toward hip hop and the will to write lyrics.
"When I heard All eyes on me for the 1st time it blew me away, & although a lot of people wouldn't consider it a classic Hip-Hop album it gave me the inspiration to start written lyrics, so I’ll always love it".
- Lunatic
In 2009 Lunatic released his debut album, Based on a true story featuring Damien Dempsey, Ri-Ra as well as 4-Real and Moschops. Sadly, Daniel Mc Donnell passed away in 2009 leaving behind a fine history full of originality with an exceptional flow of lyrics. His personality speaks for itself earning a reputation that was known to provide the working class of Ballymun with the "will" to write lyrics for themselves. His loss opened a gate that paved way for the likes of LD and Companion, Costello - illosophical (bottom right).

So what is DFI? (Don't Flop Ireland) is a gathering of battlers from across Ireland. The events are held through-out small venues in Ireland.  It holds a majority of different competitors coming from different counties, resulting into some quality inter-county rap battles. Redzer is the host in what is a really entertaining concept that helps reveal potential talent. For some, DFI is as far is it goes in terms of popularity. The result of a certain battle could lead to more views for the winner who, more than likely has lyrics swarming YouTube.
Potential Begrudging: In one DFI battle Rob Steenson was supposed to battle a girl (from England if I remember). Anyway long story short, Rob never turned up, leading the host which was Redzer or Collie at the time labelling him a coward, or something along those lines. That maybe proof of some people who just expect you to have nothing other than DFI and could result in jealousy within the whole DFI slash struggling Irish rappers. The success of Rob Kelly, Maverick Sabre and potential others following their path will no doubt admit to an element of jealousy inflicted upon them. If I was to guess, not taking anything away from the die-hard fans of The Original Rudeboys, but I know there are certain individuals not giving them credit when it's due. Just like many other countries flooding with talent, nobody is ever too shy of voicing their opinion whether it's positive or negative; it's the nature of the game within any music industry.

Cork: If you think Dublin rappers are lyrical in their own shape or form, you could be right, but not by much. We may be the capital of Ireland, but Cork bring the heat every time with their own majority of rappers; G.M.C, Bony, Nash, K.Snatch, Genesis, Matamatik, all have as much popularity in their own county as they do here. Cork has a different style of rapping, supplying an element of heavy accent and multisyllabic flow that is hard to follow at first but it will grow on you. It was great to see a lack of bias in Irish Rappers revealed - an RTE documentary analysing the characteristics within our own hip hop community.
RTE's Irish Rappers revealed: I understand when rappers say they don't care for fame and that lark and just enjoy writing and rhyming for those who will listen, whether it's for two or three hundred people. But Irish Rappers revealed was a documentary focusing on those who are searching for success; a possible career outside of YouTube, twitter, Facebook etc. Some of the above included as well as those who fail to differ. And you know what? props to those who did take part in that film, particularly Redzer in which the film was more focused on, revealing his life ambitions as well as his rap companion, Siyo (left). Out of the majority of rappers who took part in the film, Big Siyo (Simon Young) stuck out in my mind. Haven known a touch about Siyo through DFI and his music in general, this film provided proof to his honesty and overall personality that could draw an audience within five minutes, on or off the stage. It was great to see inside the home of a man struggling with something he adores. A former hairdresser, Siyo is seen pleading for a discovered talent to be recognised. With His humorous performances, whether it's DFI or gigs could put him in a category of very few hosting some potential success.

On that note: Siyo is one I could relate to and feel his ambition and possible struggle. He gave up on a career, leading him down a completely different path. I was a plumber for 3 years...I am now studying Journalism. Talk about a complete change of direction!!! This is something Siyo can, and probably already is representing to the people of Ireland caught in a similar situation.

I am not convinced if it was the right idea to film certain individuals collecting their labour (social welfare to those with a job). I collect the social welfare, no shame in that. The country is in recession, something that even the "well off" can't avoid, but to make it seem like these rappers are fighting to get out of a ghetto and that rap was their only solution? It was humorous and reminded me of a couple of documentaries I watched on Tupac, Biggie and others who are genuinely looking for a way out, a better life...not just to pay bills!
No disrespect, It's fantastic to see some of them hold on to their goal, an addiction could be the right word, I don’t know, but surely there is a shitty job out there to keep you on the straight and narrow while you consider your options in terms of hip hop and which way you want to go?

Irish Rappers Revealed was quite interesting and would serve well to those who wish to learn about our very own rap culture. Although it did only consist of the "up and coming"; Rob was excluded  which was quite surprising, Collie, and Cork's popular duo, Bony and Nash as well as Nu-centz and Rawsoul were also excluded.

As for the majority of Irish Rappers in the Documentary, most would see this as a great expansion in terms of Ireland’s talent. Rob Steenson, who was not part of the film, for reasons I am not sure of, believes in the hip hop movement, but unlike other parts of the world, we are progressing very slowly.
He said "Ireland's a small country so making it here is obviously a lot different to making it in the states or whatever! There is definitely an audience in Ireland at the minute; it’s just taken a while to get out there to people. A lot more people listen to Irish hip hop now then 3 years ago; hopefully in another 3 years it will be the same again."

The short film was also shown on BBC 1 and BBC3 so that in itself is a stepping stone for Irish Hip Hop.
For a population of our rappers, Europe seems a distance right now, although Rob Kelly's The Real Thing featuring Rebecca Creighton is trending serious airwaves. Rob is leading a fine example and could possibly pave the way for those looking for that similar route. Following Maverick Sabre and the continuous expansion of the Original Rudeboys, Rob Kelly is a few hundred short of 50,000 YouTube hits for his latest track. As much as commercial can be quite irritating, a wide demographic will lend it the time!

Is there potential success for battlers of the concept DFI provides? Maybe, I mean I don't wish to be too bias relating to one artist. Yes I could list the rappers who I/we have come to listen to on You-Tube wondering if there is room for a solo Irish rapper.

Rob Steenson, Nash, Bony, Jambo, Genesis, Costello, Lethal Dialect, Siyo, terawritz, Ksnatch, GMC, Rawsoul, Nugget, Nu-Centz, redzer, Collie, matamatik, All with a tremendous amount of rhyming abilities.
There is more than enough room on YouTube and maybe some of the above deserve it more than others. Of course they could debate all day about who has been in the game longer, consistency does matter and goes a long way, but in this case there is too many wanting the same thing, which is not a fault in any way but it appears too many are following a similar path... of each other!. Yes we are all the same nationality, but this is a stiff competition right now. Seven years ago it was original, fresh, with no pressure to seek that career you are working ever so hard for.

Supporting a slow movement: As an adolescent I had figured out what I believed to be hip hop. My own experiences within the joys of hip hop evolved around the usual and more. The usual, Well, I was just your typical Tupac Shakur fanatic. Like many around the globe, I took liken to the biggest lyricists at that time and I still listen to old school only. I don't mind admitting that I am very narrow- minded and to be frank, I can't stand the commercial crap released these days. Sure, you could argue that I am not the demographic these artists are aiming their music at, but I don't understand how the appropriate demographic can listen to, never mind purchase the stuff. The harsh reality is people need commercial status, it's a routine in hip hop originated from the best for decades!
Just like my introduction, I will continue to support any hip hop movement. It just frustrates me, more so the artists, to see particular talent go unnoticed. I mean these are potential careers being over-looked. The majority of songs from our own are not everyone’s cup of tea, and to be frank most can be either too hard-core or too fake! But you know what? That’s what separates the realists from the blow-ins. Who's dedicated themselves more? And I am sure it isn’t the rapper alone creating the path, it's the people surrounding him/her. The results following the documentary have not been entirely great, people bickering about the involvement of some and absent of others. I for one have mixed thoughts, but you can't please everyone.

Ah well, we can only embrace what’s been done and look forward to the future of our very own, and the year it has been for the some of the artists included in this script! (I had no intention of it being this long!). Apologies to those I might have missed, not purposely; however it goes to show the growth of Irish rappers.

Following the success of Batman Begins in 2005, Christian Bale must have fancied the work of Nolan, taking up another leading role in a dark, twisted tale of exacerbation between two obsessive magicians.

Set upon the end of the nineteenth century, Robert Angler (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) are both associates of a seasoned magician by the name of Cutter (Michael Caine) who lives off teaching amateur magicians. An aged persona in Cutter, he can see serious potential in both Robert and Borden but both their perceptions of appropriate magic have wide differentiation.

When a magic trick involving a water tank goes wrong, ending with the drowning of Robert's wife, the blame is shed upon Alfred who had apparently back-tracked on which way he should have tied the knot, trapping Julia (Wife) until her death.

The after-mat of the unfortunate incident leads to the eventual plot of the prestige which consists of jealousy and rivalry. The death of Robert's wife sees both men depart, leading separate careers that result in twisted sacrifices. Both make it their all to become the best magician in the town, even if that means the sabotage of ones career, maybe life! The prestige shows a desperate tale of obsession and begrudging as Robert and Alfred struggle to reach the prime they ever so dream of.

"Now you're looking for the secret. But you won't find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled." - Michael Caine's Cutter

Its dark concept reveals a love story from both camps as Olivia (Scarlett Johansson) sets a goal of deceiving both individuals, playing one off the other resulting in complications within Alfred's own relationship with Sarah (Rebecca Hall). Although Alfred and Robert show a hint of feelings for Olivia , both clever individuals see her as a spy as they both persuade her to infiltrate each others lives and performances resulting in what they hope is the revealing secrets within their magic.

Cutter is caught between the vicious rivalry as it is seen as the last straw for Robert who's desperate attempt to out-with Alfred is looking slim as he struggles to find a loop-hole within "The Transported Man", a gifted new trick holding a secret that Alfred will take to the grave!

Seen through the eyes of possessive magicians, the Prestige is an original, extraordinary tale of two individuals desperate to wow their audience with the next step...the prestige!

This is a glorious piece of work with memorable performances from both Bale and Jackman. Just like the previous work of Christopher Nolan, his brother Johnathan has also helped with the creation of a screenplay that proves once again that their weird and wonderful directing has resulted in a fantastic movie.

The prestige is one of my personal favourites and will go down as one of the best movies of the last decade. Michael Caine adds to the delightful cast with his presence resulting in an element that can only be relished and embraced through the experienced Christopher Nolan.

Overall: An original concept with performances and twists guaranteed to blow your mind!

The Dictator Review 2012

Sacha Baron Cohen returns to chuckle the audience with another wacky character, a "Mockumentary" fictional portrayal of a Dictator by the name of Aladeen.

The republic of Wadiya is summoned by the oppressive ruling of Aladeen, who's portrayal of a disruptive and in-human individual is far from mundane. Although Aladeen is as egotistic and ruthless as they come, his hilarious persona sees him travel to New York to clear up an apparent accusation of his holdings in Wadiya.

The South African oil rich country he dictates has had eye brows raised for strong rumours concerning a mass holding of nuclear weapons. America, being the most convenient (sarcastic)country to voice its opinion, calls for Aladeen to voice a clear explanation for these accusations.

It is when Aladeen arrives in New York for a conference that the trip goes awry and where the elements of his true character and comedy combine. He is soon found a lost puppy when an incident involving his kidnapping sees him left on the streets of New York with his signature beard being removed leaving him unrecognisable but vulnerable to the public which could be a bad thing in terms of his reputation.

Aladeen, who would rather shoot himself in the head than see his beloved Wadiya turn into a Democracy state, is fighting for his country and leadership as Tahir replaces Aladeen with a foney Dictator, who in time, will agree to a Democracy free republic.

The Dictator offers a decent cast. Ben Kingsley plays Tahir, a corrupt friend of who in truth wants rid of him, leaving himself to take the throne of Wadiya. Anna Faris is Zoey, a helpful individual who runs a food store in the heart of the city. Oblivious to the man without the beard, she offers to help Aladeen with work and offers him a job in her store.

Minor cameos include Megan Fox, and a bit-part role featuring the always hilarious John C. Reilly who is Clayton, the head of security at a Waldorf hotel who assures Aladeen of his safety.

So what does the Dictator offer in difference to Sacha Baron's previous creations. It was nice to see a scripted concept from Sacha. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) was brilliant and will go down as one of greatest comedies of all time. But Brüno (2009) over stepped the mark in terms of the sheer desperate attempt to make the audience laugh, failing to accomplish what Borat had done in terms of originality. Sure, the character was gay and we found his feminist personality fun at first, but all in all it was highly forgettable. The Dictator succeeds in keeping you entertained, offering some hilarious, yet unexpected moments in the movie where you will be like "Did that just happen"?. Obviously, like  Borat and Bruno, it gains notice through its level of controversy. Sacha does indeed over step the mark relating to real life Dictators and he does it with hilarious originality.

The Dictator is nothing special but is worth a watch, especially for its cheap laughs and outlandish character. I was delighted to see Sacha Baron descend from the concept that brought his British persona to life in Hollywood. Ali G Indahouse was the first fictional character from Sacha in what was hugely successful in Britain. To see Sacha reform to script writing once again was enjoyable and makes for a decent watch.

Overall: Don't be fooled by Bruno or Borat, very different and Unexpectedly humorous

Van Persie's crying departure

Robin Van Persie, signed by Wenger in 2004 was just a mundane transfer in the clubs history. Back when he kicked ball for Feyenoord, he was hot property taking into account the KNVB award he picked at just 17. That award stood for "best young talent". It was a significant mark before an exciting future as he put pen to paper to sign his first professional contract to stamp a three and a half year move to his home-land club. He went on to score a hand full of goals before a fall out within the Feyenoord camp. Both he and manager, Bert Van Merwijk, failed to see eye-to-eye leading to numerous statements from Merwijk claiming Van Persie's attitude to be uncontrollable and something that he refuses to deal with. A demotion thrown at Van Persie resulted to him playing with the reserves as well as a tense climax that saw him sent home from the 2002 champions League qualifier against Real Madrid. Now I am sure there is more than meets the eye particularly a hidden agenda behind the transfer that seen Robin so eagerly depart to Arsenal. It was an easy motive to leave his first professional club considering he spent most of 2003-04 season on the bench.

Note: SBV Excelsior is the youth club Robin Joined at the age of 14. After less than a year in their presence, a fall out between manager, and a rough relationship with his mother lead to the eventual departure resulting in his transfer to Feyenoord.

Now, while it would seem quite pathetic to pick on a such a talent at a young age in terms of personal behaviour, his past experience with clubs and the managers that run them seem quite appropriate taking into account the statement Van Persie left to Arsenal fans across the globe on Wednesday the 4th.

Out of my huge respect for Mr. Wenger, the players and the fans I don’t want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward. “I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract. You guys, the fans, have of course the right to disagree with my view and decision and I will always respect your opinions.”

Well what a surprise! No really, what a surprise! He was approaching nine years at Arsenal, a club that in a way stuck with what can only be described as a crash dummy with numerous faults! Through-out his career there is no doubt that when he played, he played well. His ability and overall presence could change a game in an instant. Did he have that gift when he was at Feyenoored? nope! Obviously players change and grow over the years, but to be quite frank, no club could have developed Robin the same way Arsenal have done. As time went by, so did his career. Arsene Wenger, a father figure to most players at the club (Apparently), showed time and time again his patience with such a talent. There is no doubt that Wenger went to sleep at night considering a transfer for Van Persie, particularly over the past 3 years at least. But yet Robin should consider himself lucky due to the severe stubbornness of Mr Wenger.

The Million dollar question: Can we challenge for the league title when this eventual transfer does proceed? YES! Any fool could say no, particularly myself as I can be quite pessimistic when it comes to Wenger's philosophy. But in terms of who, why and how we have lost key players over the years, particularly in the most recent transfer windows, our third place finish is an acceptable achievement!

Okay, I hear you, "But...but, Van persie scored all the goals for us? we would be lost without him!"
True, but an obvious fact taken into account the oblivious presence of strikers such as Marouane Chamakh, Bendtner, Park, Vela and Joel Campbell! I am not believing for a second that Van Persie alone dragged us to third. Like many, Arsenal is a football team! Team being the key word. The squad in no doubt supplied Robin with the goals that shed some light back onto a player who has not been there for Arsenal in the past.

Ground-hog day? Remember Bill Murray's character? well, he is the equivalent to each and every Arsenal fan that has had to witness the same owl bull every season! It seems simple routine for us to hand away our best talent every time a player gets impatient...or greedy! Samir Nasri, Kolo Toure, Adebayor, Gael Clichy and Cesc Fabregas! Thierry's departure was the right time. As for Alexander Hleb, well you know you messed up mate.

My last paragraph reeks of the colour blue! "MONEY MONEY MONEY" (Abba is the band on each and every players Dre Beats at the Etihad Stadium). The scary thing is not necessarily the departure of Van Persie, it is to who he will join. It will hurt to see him join City. The power at that club speaks for itself. Already you have little deceiving "Rats" like Toure calling out for Robin to join the money train. It is highly understandable when a player wants to win things, respect. But when a player like Van Persie gives his best and longest run of games in one season decides he has had enough? I find that unacceptable. Why? well his glass body has shown proof over the years leading to lack of consistency and overall appearance. I believe in my heart that he owes Arsenal (more to Arsene) the rest of his playing days and I speak for the rest of the "Gunners" that if he proved man enough to sign for another three seasons with the club, with numerous signings by his side, we, and him would achieve at least two trophies come season 2012/13 (the League title and maybe Carling).

What is that you say? he still has a season left? not good enough! Plus I would rather bring Nickolas Bendtner back than let Robin go on a free! (Honestly). If that is the sacrifice we make as a football club, so be it. I just pray to god that if Robin does not come to his senses and pushes further for oblivion, Wenger must, for the first time in a long time have a valuable replacement!

Where do we go from here? We get this saga over and done with. Arsenal fans have grown tired of these transfer dramas being dragged so far "beyond the thunder-dome" that it affects our start to the new season. Van Persie's statement last Wednesday could not have been more blunt and severe in terms of the judgement of both manager and owners! (fucking yanks). Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski is a step in the right direction...well about one step to be frank! Podolski's club rep is not convincing and his recent spat in the European Championship did him no favours. Oliver Giroud is french so kind of sums up Wenger's motive behind that signing! As I type I am suffering with sever flashbacks in relation to our last signing from the french league! Let's just say I hold high-hopes for Giroud. He is tall and strong with possibly a better chance at heading the ball than both Chamakh and Bendtner! (Both were signed for heading ability correct?). Third time lucky please god...

“I love the club and the fans, no matter what happens. I have grown up and became a man during my time with Arsenal FC,” Robin van Persie added. “Everybody at the club and the fans have always supported me over the years and I have always given my all (and more) on and off the pitch. I am very proud of being part of this fantastic club for the last eight years.

It is awfully frustrating to see Wenger purchase two strikers (Podolski on the wing also) since the season climaxed. Of course we argue till the dogs come home about Wengers lack of signings but the most recent activity from the manager seems an element of De-Ja-Vu in terms of mediocre players. I mean does Arsene believe what he has brought in so far to be an immediate replacement for the Van? or better yet a solution to convincing Robin to stay by yelling "Look at me Robin, I am buying players...now will you stay?"

Unfortunately we all know that is not the way it works. It seems just like the previous gifted players to depart, it is one year too late for Wenger to keep last seasons top scorer. I mean come on, no disrespect to Lukas and Giroud, but could Arsene not show some courage and actually bid for a striker that every club craves? Surely that means the striker has talent am I right? I mean if Barcelona, City, Man United etc are chasing a player, surely you also want that same guy because clearly these players are born and bread trophy winners! So bid and see what happens. If that same player chooses to join elsewhere fine. At least Arsenal can say to the fans look? we tried...

We all know the truth is really in the french pudding! Arsene is not only stubborn with the clubs income, but afraid to compete with clubs over players that actually make a team, not break one! Sure, the folks behind the club can babble on about how they are still reforming a project in relation to the youth coming through the clubs ranks etc, but the average fan needs an opinion also. Not saying that concept has not worked in the past...that is the past! The future is now. Plus if we do give birth to someone fresh he will be snatched up two years down the line if the club do not get their act together. That there is the harsh truth about the youth Arsenal produce or the rookies we buy. We form them and then sell them. Again that is me being extremely pessimistic. Do you blame me?

The five year trophy drought (Six if the window is dry) is the obvious scent that is driving potential players away from the club!

Solution? Text Van Persie now and ask him to sleep on it! Same answer as before Robin? Fine. We need to sell him and do it quick! The two recent signings are not the calibre we need to combine a force to be reckoned with next season! I mean that is what we want right? "Lean, mean grilling machines"! Men not kids! The manager needs to sit down with a glass of the finest french red wine (the blood of Nasri) and consider the ambition within the players and the club itself. Who wants to be there? Who loves the club and who likes the club? Obviously there are others beneath the rubble looking for an escape route or perhaps those who are simply not good enough to play for Arsenal.

We need a mixture of talent combined into one strong element! Success is the key next season, with or without Van Persie. A departure that is by-far not finalised but indeed seems the likely result for Robin. I wish him all the best with the rest of his career, wherever he goes for he has been fantastic in Arsenals most desperate of times. For all he has done, there will always be a level of despise from the fans towards him for all he done and the more he could have done...

The Amazing Spider-man Review 2012

"What? a Spider-man re-boot?...but but..."

Yes folks, even after its release the majority of fans in terms of Spider-man and movies in general still cannot believe their eyes! 10 years since Sam Raimi created the big screen synopsis of Peter Parker/Spider man, Marc Webb takes a crack of the whip. (Webb? how convenient)

Webb, who brought us a delightful flick in 500 Days of summer back in 2009, opens up a new path in the spider-man saga. Not necessarily a new concept in terms of Peter Parker's origin, but an attractive cast and the possibility of a breath-taking plot in relation to the mysterious disappearance of Peter's parents.

Peter (Andrew Garfield) is your typical quirky high-school lonesome who in some way seems geeky through the eyes of the students around him. His geeky character is a disguise for his genius knowledge in synthetic biology. We see previously the distraught and realism to come as we witness numerous flashbacks of the brief child-hood Peter shared with his parents. The next of kin in his eyes is now his uncle and best friend Ben...as in uncle Ben! (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field).

Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone) is the attractive sweet heart. An intern in Peter's school, her genuine personality and kind hearted likeness quickly lures Peter to her feet. Peter is obviously the underrated photographer and grows in time as we well know. He uses Gwen as an excuse to use his camera as we see his persona shine whenever she is present. There is huge difference in chemistry in terms of Parker's previous on-screen love Mary-Jane. There is no fight here, it is immediate love and proves a pleasure to endure romance at its realist.

As the path to Spider-man is played out (longer than expected might I add), a serious lack of information on his parents disappearance leads Peter on a hot trail which results in a convenient connection with Oscorp. The genetics empire is run by Dr Connors (Rhys Ifans), a one armed genius who is destined to change the way of the living world in terms of animal biology and other weird scientific nonsense to be blunt! It is not the knowledge of Connors that attracts Parker and the audience, it is the convenient relation between Peters father and Connors himself.

Then happens the birth we have all grown to know and love. Peter is curious to speak to Connors and gets himself into Oscorp along with a group of other folks absorbing the De-tour. Curiosity killed the cat they say, In Peters case it just got him bitten by a nasty spider resulting in eh'... SPIDER-MAN!

So a montage of sequences show us the freaky results of Peters incident, giving him some amazing abilities including the ability to scale walls, fine awareness (Spider-sense) and a beast in the owl fighting techniques. I never quite got that to be fair, how does this result him being a top-class fighter? anyway, that's the case. A new life awaits the soon to be "Friendly neighbour hoo ah forget it!

Sam Webb's Spider-man provides a new contrast but in small parts. Obviously the introduction to any Spider-man origin is the incident that creates the hero, but it is what follows that can make a significant difference in relation to Sam Raimi's take on the web-slinger. Spidey's villain is Dr Connors' eventual transformation, the Lizard. On all accounts, and honesty, I was not pushed on what was revealed in trailers in terms of the lizard concept. It turns out I was wrong, he looked quality and could possible be CGI at its best. A fine result of the gruelling abilities and vicious mind-set that is revealed when the Lizard prowls the streets and sewers. Rhys Ifans is a tremendous actor with a fine career. His inclusion was always going to mark a good result whether Webb's portrayal was a success or not.

The audience will enjoy the all-round cast but in fairness, Martin Sheen played a typical uncle Ben and Field's Aunt May could never fail. It was easy work supplied by qualified acting. I believe the controversy following this re-boot is the copy-cat sequences in terms of it's predecessor. By all means not by myself but the real critics of course! This review is not a comparison, more of a  recommendation to the fans of the franchise to see this re-boot.

Andrew Garfield is a perfect fit for the red and blue spandex, just like when Tobey Maguire was back in 2002. The difference? Not much, well, age and maybe the ability to bring some seriousness to the franchise. I know Spider-Man 3 (2007)  was not Tobey's fault but The Amazing Spider-man brings something new to the table in terms of darkness, drama and a much needed birth of new romance. The action scenes are quite brilliant also taking into account the 3D sequences that are unexpectedly fantastic and highly memorable. (Dam it, I kind of compared just there, didn't I?). The suit is beautiful and easy on the eye even though Webb pushed for a darker contrast. The web slinging and overall situations Spidey gets into makes this the best movie I have seen in 3D so far. (And I hate 3D!)

Bear in mind folks there are weaknesses to this re-boot. I am not talking "needle in a haystack" stuff I will leave that for the "Spidey fanatics". The plot is far from convincing. You are lead to believe Peter Parker's curiosity into his parents disappearance will lead to an exciting investigation and overall climax. As exciting and entertaining the two hours were, I felt let down as I was forced to settle for high expectations in terms of a sequel. (A recently released statement admitted a trilogy by the way). There is an explanation that awaits the audience, one that in my opinion should have been settled a lot sooner.

My advice on the Amazing Spider-man is see it at once and enjoy it for what it is. Although It has only been 10 years, embrace and admire the new era of Spidey that Mr Webb is attempting to throw at us. As repetitive as some scenes might be, and a minor let-down does not take away the fact that the Amazing Spider-man was hugely entertaining with a tremendous acting performance from both Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

Overall: A slightly fresh and enjoyable movie with a memorable performance from Garfield.

7.5/10
